CHICAGO (CBS) – A man accused of breaking into a home on Chicago's Northwest Side early Sunday morning is hospitalized after police say he was shot by the homeowner he was attempting to rob.

The 27-year-old suspect, identified as Jeremy Tyler, was listed in critical condition Sunday evening after he was shot in the arm by the homeowner. He has been charged with a felony count of burglary.

The incident has rattled many in the Dunning neighborhood.

It was just after 1 a.m. when police say the suspect broke into the home in the 3600 block of North Newcastle Avenue.

The homeowner told police he woke up after he heard his dog barking. When he heard a loud noise in the basement he proceeded to take out his firearm.

Just minutes later the homeowner came face to face with the intruder. He told police he opened fire when the suspect began walking toward him.

The intruder was shot once and police arrived soon after.
