Hostage Situation Ends At Cook County Jail

(CBS) -- Two Cook County Jail inmates took a fellow detainee hostage for more than three hours after taking over a maximum-security section of the facility, the sheriff's department said.

The standoff began around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, when the inmates sabotaged surveillance cameras in a housing tier in Division 10, the sheriff's office said in an email. One of 16 inmates who live in the tier was being held hostage by the "two aggressors" with a sharp object.

The hostage was stabbed in the leg but was expected to be okay.

The sheriff's Emergency Response Team worked to resolve the situation peacefully, the sheriff's department said. Officials said it was over around 8 p.m.

No officers have been injured.
