Inmates In Parts Of Cook County Jail Under Isolation After Some Show Flu-Like Symptoms

(CBS) -- Inmates in three living units at the Cook County Jail are under isolation after some have exhibited flu-like symptoms, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.

The detainees in the three units, Division 08/Residential Treatment Unit (RTU) Tier 2E, Division 1 Tier E3 and Cermak Hospital Unit 3 South, are under isolation, which means no movement and visits. A fourth unit, Division 3 Annex Tier B3, is being monitored and is under heightened surveillance with restricted movement.

The sheriff's office says approximately 70 detainees are affected by the isolation.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Cara Smith says there is more to it than cutting off contact.

"Heightened sanitation procedures and we make sure that there's additional cleaning and laundry occurs in the effected tiers and division and we limit the movement of those detainees to help curb the spread of the virus to other people that they may come in contact to," Smith said.
Friends and family of inmates can check on their location in the jail with the inmate locator at www.cookcountysheriff.org. They can also call 773-674-5225.
