Indiana State Trooper Injured By Alleged Drunk Driver

(CBS) -- An Indiana State Trooper was hurt early Saturday morning on I80-94 in Munster by an alleged drunk driver from Chicago, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

The officer was standing between his marked Dodge Charger and the median wall operating a hand held radar gun when a jeep hit his vehicle and knocked it into the officer. State Police Sergeant Dwayne Dillahunty was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

According to police, the driver of the Jeep took off on foot and was caught by a Munster Police officer a short time later. Norris Benbow, 43, is charged with DUI causing bodily injury, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash and driving on a suspended license.

The officer was part of a multi-state driver safety operation taking place this weekend called the I90/94 Challenge.

This is the second time on four days an Indiana state trooper had been injured by an alleged drunk driver.
