Illinois Voter Information Set To Become Part Of National Database Next Year

(CBS) -- Illinois voter registration information will soon become part of a national database, reports WBBM's Mariam Sobh.

Former Governor Pat Quinn signed on to join the Electronic Registration Information Center or ERIC program in 2016 along with several other states.

The national database is expected to keep information secure, but some tech experts are concerned.

"The big thing is that it has got a lot of people's sensitive and personally identifiable information and so in it and so like any other giant database that has that type of information if it leaks out people could be subject to identity theft and other types of cyber-crime," said Tom Imboden a professor of Information Systems at SIU.

Illinois joins nearly a dozen other states who plan to implement the database.

Three states that currently use it include Maryland, Washington and Utah. Officials there say they haven't had any problems.
