Illinois State Police Cruiser, Several Other Vehicles Involved In Crash On I-55

JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) -- The northbound lanes of Interstate 55 at Route 30 in the Joliet area were closed for several hours Wednesday after a major crash.

State Police said at 1:24 p.m., District 5 troopers were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash with injuries.

A state police squad car was stopped with its emergency lights on in the left lane and a trooper was out of the cruiser assisting to a stalled driver. Another vehicle heading north in the same location rear-ended the squad car and caused the multi-vehicle crash, state police said.

The state trooper was rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries. Two other drivers were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

All lanes were back open by the early evening.
