Tammy Duckworth Wins Dem Nomination For U.S. Senate

CHICAGO (CBS) – Tammy Duckworth cruised to a decisive victory on Tuesday's Democratic primary for U.S Senate.

Her victory creates a dramatic showdown with incumbent Mark Kirk, which is expected to be one of the most expensive and closely watched contests in the country.

Duckworth quickly took aim at the Republican, saying he has recently voiced potential support for controversial presidential candidate Donald Trump, should Trump win the GOP nomination.

"We sent a loud and clear message tonight. We reject the politics of fear and division that have no place in Illinois," Duckworth told supporters.

Duckworth, a two-time congresswoman representing the northwest suburbs, defeated challengers Andrea Zopp and Napoleon Harris.

Duckworth held commanding leads in preliminary polling and outraised her lesser-known competitors substantially.
