Illinois Legislators Meet For 2nd Day Of Budget Session

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) — Day 2 of the Illinois General Assembly's special session to hammer out a state budget seemed to yield frustration and no immediate solution.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports.

Tensions were apparent on the House floor and in hearing rooms Thursday, with lawmakers sniping at each other.

Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, holds most of the cards.

"The speaker's joining in the fight to get this done," Democratic Rep. Justin Slaughter said. "Things are happening. We're here to get something done."

Senate Democrats, state Republicans and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner all back compromise proposals for cuts and tax increases. Madigan is the holdout.

Madigan and House Minority Leader James Durkin met Wednesdays.

"I made it clear I'm willing to help. I want to get this done. I'm prepared to put votes on some of the tough bills, but I need something back in return," he said.

"He indicated that he's willing to get engaged," Durkin added. "Whatever that means."
