Illinois Election Official Downplays Impact Of Records Hack
(CBS) -- The Illinois Board of Elections says "no more than about 200,000" voters have been affected by a cyber-hacking of the registration rolls this summer.
The state board of elections does not have any voters' credit card information or financial records, says General Counsel Ken Menzel.
So he says that's not at risk, now that hackers -- probably foreign-based -- have gotten into the registration rolls. In some cases, records may include driver's license numbers and the last four digits of a Social Security number, he says.
Menzel says the issue has been fixed. But he says it's an ongoing, ever-escalating war, as hackers try to get into the system.
The actual vote-counting is a separate system, he says. People should still be confident that totals are accurately reported and that the system will not be "rigged," Menzel says.
