Igloo Pops Up In The Middle Of Wacker Drive
CHICAGO (CBS) -- On Upper Wacker Drive at Columbus Drive, in the shadow of luxury high-rises and within view of Trump Tower, stands a different kind of structure, albeit temporary: an igloo.
The rectangular igloo is about 7 feet long, 5 feet wide, and 5 feet high. It was fashioned from slabs of ice left behind by last week's winter storm, and sits at the base of a traffic signal pole in the median of Upper Wacker Drive at Columbus.
Andrea Graham said she can't believe how well it was put together.
"I think it's pretty cool. Yeah, I don't know why it's there, but someone has a lot of extra time on their hands," she said.
Ashley Lindsay walked right past it as she crossed the street and somehow didn't notice it.
"That's hilarious. I walked right by it," she said. "Someone was dedicated, apparently, in very cold weather."
She said whoever made it is "really clever."
That clever person is David Louis Sudler, who, contrary to some initial witness reports, is not a homeless man creating a shelter.
In fact, he lives in a nearby high-rise.
He just likes to clear snow and make it safer for people to walk.
"There is no homeless guy out there building an igloo," he said. "They don't have the shovels, or anything."
Simeon Pavlov says he saw the man building it yesterday, "getting blocks of ice and putting it together." Pavlov thought the igloo-maker may have been homeless, but he wasn't.
No one inside the igloo when WBBM Newsradio visited Wednesday morning.
Eric Black said he thinks the igloo should be removed.
"Alderman [Brendan] Reilly should probably get on that. That's dangerous. It's about to fall over," he said.
