Icy Road Conditions Cause 9-Vehicle Crash On Dan Ryan

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A nine-vehicle crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side sent four people to the hospital Tuesday morning.

The nine vehicles crashed about 4:15 a.m. on northbound Dan Ryan lanes near 47th Street because of icy road conditions, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Rodney Collins said.

Two people were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious-to-critical condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Juan Hernandez said. Two others were taken in fair-to-serious condition to University of Chicago Medical Center, Hernandez said.

Five people refused medical treatment at the scene, Hernandez said.

Lanes were closed until 5:30 a.m., but are now completely open to traffic, Collins said.
