Hyde Park Academy High School student killed in hit-and-run on her way to work in Dolton
Hyde Park Academy High School students are mourning the second classmate killed by a hit-and-run driver in little more than a week.
Lania Smith, 18, was struck and killed on Monday evening on her way to work in south suburban Dolton.
Police said she was hit by a red 2007 Chevrolet Corvette, with Illinois license plate FR 56003, near Sibley Boulevard and Martin Luther King Drive. Investigators have not yet determined who was driving at the time.
In a Gofundme to raise money for her funeral services, Smith's family said she was looking forward to prom and her upcoming graduation.
A separate hit-and-run in the South Shore neighborhood in Chicago on March 21 claimed the life of another Hyde Hark Academy student.
Violet Harris, 15, died after she was hit by a black SUV while she and a friend were riding electric scooters near 77th Street and Exchange Avenue.
Chicago police were reviewing cameras in the area for information about the driver in that case.
