Hundreds Of Chicago Police Officers Target Drug And Gun Activity
CHICAGO (CBS) — Hundreds of Chicago Police officers flood districts on the West and South sides in very visable, high profile, targeted enforcement action.
The point of this anti-violence mission is for police to let the bad guys know we are here, especially in high crime corners on the South and West sides.
Police said they have a heavy, visible presence on hot corners where drugs are sold. They are also doing traffic stops, parole checks, serving warrants and heavily patrolling areas in the 6th, 10th and 15th districts seeing the most violence.
The FBI, Department of Homeland Security, DEA task forces, Illinois State Police and the Cook County Sheriff's Office are all helping Chicago Police.
CBS 2 was told these are all uniformed officers. There is no undercover work.
Police made an arrest about an hour ago in a carjacking that spilled over from the suburbs. Superintendent Eddie Johnson assisted in arresting three people who are suspects in the carjacking.
This targeted mission started at about 7 p.m. Friday night and will go on throughout the weekend.
Five mobile command centers are set up across the city.
