Hundreds Of Chicago Families Get Early Christmas Present

(CBS) -- A Chicago tradition called Christmas in the Wards brought an early Christmas to some Chicago families Saturday, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

The gym at Olive Harvey College was filled with more than 1,000 toys and bicycles and the kids who would receive them. Businessman Larry Huggins started the event 19 years ago.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I ever thought that this event would make Christmas possible for over 5,000 families," Huggins said.

Congressman Danny Davis was among those who showed up to make Christmas brighter for kids who don't have much.

"The fact that they will share this with young people especially who may not actually have a Santa Claus coming except the Santa Claus that they're going to receive today," Davis said.

It is one of several area events this weekend in which businesses and individuals have donated cash and toys to help the less fortunate.
