Fire Badly Damages Steeple At Humboldt Park Church

CHICAGO (CBS) -- No injuries were reported when an extra-alarm fire damaged the steeple of a church Tuesday morning in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

The fire started around 8:20 a.m. at Salvation and Deliverance Ministries International at 1540 N. Spaulding Av.

Firefighters said the blaze was contained to the church's steeple. While the steeple itself was badly damaged, the rest of the church was usable, officials said.

Seven nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution while firefighters were battling the flames. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by about 9:30 a.m.

Investigators said the cause of the fire was under investigation, but it might have started due to a lightning strike.
