Hot Doug's Fans Line Up For Final Week Of Gourmet Dogs
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Most people are having breakfast this time of day, but a number of people already have lunch on their minds as they line up at Hot Doug's Sausage Superstore and Encased Meat Emporium, which is closing for good on Friday.
WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, by 7 a.m. Tuesday, the line outside Hot Doug's stretched three-quarters of a block down Roscoe Street from California Avenue.
The first two people in line showed up at 9 p.m. Monday.
"It's not for a hot dog. It's the experience. It's because you're not going to be able to do it again. This is it," said Daniel Drake, who knew what he was going to order when Hot Doug's opens at 10:30 a.m.: a foie gras and sauternes duck sausage with truffle aioli, foie gras mousse, and fleur de sel.
"I'll be picking some up for some friends. Get some duck fat fries," he said.
Alex Wallace has a tattoo of the Hot Doug's logo on his thigh, and that's been good enough to get him free hot dogs. After Friday, though, it won't really get him anything, since Hot Doug's will close for good.
"I don't care. I have plenty of dumb tattoos," he said.
Friday is the last day for Hot Doug's. Owner Doug Sohn has said it's time for him to do something else.
