Home invaders hold resident at gunpoint in Winnetka, Illinois

Resident held at gunpoint during home invasion in Winnetka, Illinois

Robbers invaded a home and held the resident at gunpoint this past weekend in the north Chicago suburb of Winnetka.

Just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Winnetka police were called to the 700 block of Rosewood Avenue for a home invasion. By the time police arrived, the home invaders had already left, possibly in a black Acura sport-utility vehicle with no license plates.

The house appeared to be the only gated home on the block.

Police said the five robbers invaded a home after one of them posed as a food delivery driver carrying a brown takeout bag from Outback Steakhouse to get in. The nearest restaurant is roughly 10 miles away.

A resident was held at gunpoint inside while the home invaders demanded specific items, police said. The victim was eventually able to escape and contact the police.

The victim did not require medical attention, police said.

Police initially said there were six robbers, but have since said there are believed to be five—all wore masks, and police have provided further specific descriptions:

  • First suspect: A Black male wearing a black Nike face gaiter, a black sweatshirt with multiple unknown logos on the front and back, dark-colored pants, purple surgical gloves, white socks, and gray flip-flops, and carrying a brown paper Outback Steakhouse takeout bag.
  • Second suspect: A Black male wearing a black sweatshirt with the hoodie up, gray sweat pants, and light-colored gym shoes.
  • Third suspect: A Black male with dreadlocks, wearing a red zipper hoodie, a white undershirt, ripped light-colored jeans, white and black gym shoes, and a black ski mask.
  • Fourth suspect: A male of an unknown race wearing a black ski mask, a black sweatshirt with the hoodie up, blue skinny jeans, and white gym shoes.
  • Fifth suspect: A male of an unknown race wearing a light-colored jacket, dark-colored pants, dark-colored shoes, and purple surgical gloves.

Throughout the day on Monday, multiple people were seen driving in and out of the gated home, including a locksmith. A neighbor told CBS News Chicago that they had handed over video from their Ring camera to the police.

The homeowner moved into the area within the last year. It is unclear if the home invasion was targeted.

Anyone with information about the crime was asked to contact Winnetka police at 847-501-6034.
