Hit-And-Run Driver Strikes Family On Bike Path In Indiana

(CBS) – A hit-and-run incident in Munster, Ind. left a pregnant woman seriously injured over the weekend.

CBS 2's Brad Edwards talks with family members whose lives were turned upside down.

The incident happened in downtown Munster, near where the bike path and the sidewalk intersect.

Jon Vert was riding a bike and towing his fiancée, Melinda Arvia, and young nephew in a bike trailer, when a motorist struck them.

"I'm surprised we're alive and I'm glad we're alive," Vert says.

Arvia had to have 18 staples in her head. When she was treated at the hospital, she learned she is 10 weeks pregnant. The baby is expected to be OK.

Munster police are investigating.
