Hiring Fair Aims To Help Veterans And Active Duty Members Get Jobs

(CBS) -- Veterans Day is coming up, and several groups and companies are focusing on helping our service members after their duty is done, WBBM's Lisa Fielding reports.

Illinois is home to the tenth largest veteran population and in the next few years, tens of thousands of post-9-11 veterans will be looking for jobs.

"The individuals who have served in the most recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars, they're younger and they're getting injured or they are coming back with minimal or little education," said Michael Ziener with the Illinois Patriot Education Fund.

Ziener says the Fifth Third Bank and Careerbuilder 2nd Annual Veteran Hiring Fair will help active duty members and veterans find work.

"We're going to be able to give a veteran who doesn't have a profile photo to put up on their LinkedIn page for free for this veteran or any veteran that showed up," Ziener said. "We're going to give them resume experience on the right ways to translate what they've done in the military into how that would relate to some of these companies who are hiring."

The fair will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Union Station. Last year, 11 veterans received on the spot job offers. 36 others reported employment from a contact made at the event within three months.
