1 Killed, 15 Hospitalized After High Winds Take Out Tent At Wood Dale Festival

(CBS) -- High winds took down a commercial sized tent in Wood Dale near Wood Dale Junior High, killing one person and injuring more than a dozen others.

Wood Dale police say one person was killed and 15 people were transported to local hospitals after high winds uprooted the tent around 2:40 p.m. Sunday.

The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Steven Nincic of Wood Dale.

The tent collapsed on the last day of Wood Dale's four-day festival called Prairie Fest. The event was supposed to end at 10 p.m. and the tent housed food and entertainment. The festival has been cancelled.

A police spokesman says the city will conduct a full investigation, including a re-examination of safety measures.

High winds gusting up to 50 miles an hour whipped through the area as the storm system moved through the area Sunday afternoon. The storm also downed trees in Rogers Park and led to an evacuation at Lollapalooza.
