Heyman: James Shields' Market Has Really Cooled

(CBS) There's only one big name left on the free-agent market, and it's right-hander James Shields.

After playing the long game in testing the market, it's believed that Shields, 33, will choose a team this weekend, with the Padres reportedly the leader and the Blue Jays, Cubs, Mariners, Dodgers, Angels and Cardinals among the other suitors still involved. But Shields' long wait likely won't pay off with a big contract, as his market has cooled, CBS Sports baseball insider Jon Heyman said on the Spiegel and Mannelly Show on Friday.

"It doesn't look like there's any hundred-million-dollar deals out there," Heyman said. "Maybe there never were going to be any. There was a rumor that he turned down 110 (million) for five (years). I kind of doubt that, but you never know. I can't find a team that's willing to admit they offered that kind of money for Shields. I think he's going to get above Ervin Santana, which was $55 million, but well less than $100 million would be my guess. I think it will be a disappointing number compared to what we expected him to get.

"Generally people get what they're worth, but a hand can be overplayed. In this case, it looks that way.

"I don't think he's going to get 80 (million). I think he's likely to get -- whether it's three or four (years), I'm not sure -- but probably somewhere in the $60-million-dollar range. If it's three, maybe 55 (million) range. If it's four, maybe 65 (million). That'd be my guess, but you never know."

Shields went 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.18 WHIP for the Royals last season.
