Heyman: Danks Is Yankees' 'Most Likely' Target
(CBS) With Cole Hamels likely staying with the Phillies and Cliff Lee struggling of late, White Sox left-hander John Danks is the Yankees' "most likely" trade target ahead of Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline, CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman told the Mully and Hanley Show on Monday morning.
Part of the reason New York makes sense is not only because of the need but because money usually isn't much of a hindrance for the Yankees.
"The contract makes a difference, too," Heyman said. "Danks has about $33 million to go. Some people might look at that as a decent contract. It's not terrible, but others many say, 'We're not sure' about having him around for another three years.
"To me, the Yankees could probably pay that whole salary … Danks is making a reasonable salary for a guy who's a No. 3 starter."
Danks is making $14 million this season, per baseballreference.com. Danks is 9-6 with a 4.40 ERA, though he's registered quality starts eight times in his last 12 outings and been much improved since late May.
Heyman added there are fewer sellers than buyers this year, so that should help teams like the White Sox and Cubs, who are out of the playoff picture. The Cubs are unlikely to move right-hander Edwin Jackson, Heyman said, because he's simply not good enough to command other teams to pay much of his salary.
Jackson is 5-11 with a 5.76 ERA. He's making $11 million this season.
