Harvey Cops Shoot, Kill Man Who Tried To Run Them Over

HARVEY, Ill. (STMW) -- Officers in south suburban Harvey shot and killed a man Sunday after he tried to run them over with a vehicle, police said.

At 10:22 a.m., police received a call of a possible armed robbery at a hotel in the 16900 block of South Halsted Street, according to a statement from Harvey police. As officers were walking up to the hotel, they "encountered the suspect" who was in a vehicle in the parking lot.

The suspect, a 20-year-old man, tried to run the officers over, police said.

Officers, who were "in fear for their lives," opened fire on the man and his vehicle, striking him, according to the statement.

Charles A. Brown, 20, was taken to Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, where he was pronounced dead at 11:21 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit and Harvey police are investigating the shooting.
