Hammond, Ind. Woman Dies After Car Rolls Over, Submerges In Retention Pond

HAMMOND, Ind. (STMW) -- A woman was killed Thursday night in a single-vehicle crash in northwest Indiana, according to authorities.

The crash happened about 6 p.m. on the I-80 northbound Kennedy ramp in Hammond, Indiana, according to Indiana State Police. The woman failed to negotiate the curve as she entered the ramp and rolled her vehicle, police said.

A witness told police that the woman – who was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla – was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed, according to police. The Toyota went off the roadway and rolled until it came to a stop on its roof. The vehicle then submerged in a retention pond located just south of the ramp, police said.

The driver was identified as Trina Harrell, 42, of Hammond, police said. Harrell was taken to Munster Community Hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according police said.
