Grandmother Fends Off Child-Abduction Attempt In Elgin

(CBS) – Elgin police are warning the public after reports of an attempted child abduction.

A 45-year-old grandmother was walking near Gertrude and Morgan with her two young grandchildren on Thursday evening when she saw a suspicious vehicle drive by, police say.

A white van made a U-turn, Cmdr. Colin Fleury, and a male suspect jumped out and attempted to abduct a boy.

Police say it was a combination of the woman screaming for help and the fact the child was strapped in the stroller that forced the suspect to flee. The grandmother told police she didn't recognize the man and didn't get a good description of him.

Elgin police are checking with surrounding police districts to see there have been any similar crimes and asking for more witnesses to come forward on this one.
