Wilmington Police Chief Philip Arnold says Jared was driving - and they were around the corner from their home when he lost control and crashed into a tree - and Chief Arnold says the wreckage was hard to see from the road.

"We still don't know exactly how long the car had been there, but we're estimating it was there for at least 20 minutes, maybe half an hour," Arnold said.

Jay Plese, superintendent of the Wilmington District 209 schools, says Cory Ann was in the band color guard and Jared was taking his sister to the high school.

"It was my understanding she was coming to practice," Plese said.

Dr. Plese says Jared had been named Wilmington High School student of the month.
