Gas Leak Prompts Palos Heights Nursing Home Residents To Be Moved To Another Part Of Facility

CHICAGO (CBS) --  A gas leak near a Palos Heights nursing care facility forced some residents to move to another wing of the facility, officials said.

Initially, authorities on the scene said residents were evacuated but officials with the Manor Care Health Services -- Palos Heights West said only the some residents were moved due to a loss of air conditioning and the smell of gas from the leak.

'The wing continues to be monitored by local officials and once clear, we will move the patients back to their rooms." according to a statement from the facility. The statement said no services will be affected.

An alert from Palos Heights asked for people to avoid the following areas: Route 7/Route 83/80th Avenue.

It is closed for natural gas leak. Nicor is responding to scene.

People are asked to use 111th and 131st for east-west access.

Also, use Harlem and La Grange for north-south access. To get to Palos Community Hospital, go to 123rd Street from the south.

Nicor released a statement regarding the incident:

As we assess our distribution system for damage, we may be required to interrupt gas service to nearby customers for safety purposes. We greatly appreciate your patience and will provide updates as the situation unfolds.
