Gary Students In School On Saturday To Make Up For Snow Day

GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- School is in session Saturday for students in Gary, Indiana. This makes a 6-day week for students, not the kind of week you want to have leading up to Mother's Day.

District leaders say it must be done to make up for late snow on March 12.

Gary schools used a snow day to keep students home and out of the elements, and now they are paying for that day-off by having to show-up for class on a Saturday.

A last-minute letter went out early this week informing parents and staff Saturday would be a make-up day for Gary's 16 public schools.

Gary schools made-up a number of other snow days from the dangerously cold and incredibly snowy winter.

District officials say after getting lots of feedback, they were forced to declare today a make-up day since the school year was winding-down and they didn't want to further delay graduation.

The normal bell schedule for each school will be in place today Saturday.

There will be no after school activities but school buses will be running and both breakfast and lunch will be served for students.
