(CBS) -- Police in Gary, Ind. say they have two suspects in custody in connection with a 13-year-old shot and killed. Now they're trying to figure out why it happened.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports one question investigators may be trying to answer is if a burglary victim turned into a shooting suspect.

Police responded to a 911 call around 5:30 p.m. Friday. Neighbors heard shots fired in the area of West 11th Avenue off of Polk Street.

The Post Tribune reports a homeowner returned to his house to find it burglarized, and began yelling in anger outside the home. Hearing the screams, some neighbors gathered including a 13-year-old boy. The Post Tribune says that's when the man fired at the teen hitting him nine times.

The corners office says 13-year-old Kobe Jones was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m. Friday. It's unclear why the teen was targeted or if he had anything to do with the burglary. Two people are in custody.
