Gary Launches Interactive Map Featuring City's Nearly 60,000 Structures

(CBS) -- The city of Gary has launched a website with an interactive map with the results of an 18-month study of the nearly 60,000 parcels in the city.

The interactive map at Garymaps.com allows users to sort building by occupancy, the property condition, and fire damaged or blighted buildings.

The survey that the map is based on found that of the 58,235 parcels in the city, 25,008 did not have a structure and 6,902 out of 33,227 structures were vacant.

Nearly 200 volunteers worked for 18 months collecting results for the survey. The city has been working with the University of Chicago to figure out what to do with all the abandoned homes and buildings in Gary.
