Friends, Family Mourn Football Player

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Teammates, friends and family gathered Saturday night to honor Andre Smith's life after the teen was died from an injury during a high school football game.

The gathering was held as Smith's former high school, Rich Central, where he played for three seasons before transferring to Bogan High School.

The Cook County medical examiner says the 17-year-old Smith died from head injuries sustained during the game. He died Friday morning.

He collapsed on a bench after walking off the field about 12 hours earlier at Stagg Stadium.

After the last play at Stagg Stadium Thursday night, Andre was able to walk off the field. The paramedic who first treated Andre told CBS 2 no one knew why he collapsed after the game.

"This is an eye opener to all football players on all levels," said Erick Smith, Andre's brother.

Spectators think he was hit during the last play of the game - but there's no official word.
