Friends, Family Continue To Mourn 11-Year-Old Girl Killed By Stray Bullet
(CBS) -- Friends and family of Shamiya Adams gathered for a vigil on Sunday, the second since the 11-year-old was killed Friday night at a sleepover.
The vigil was organized by Chicago Citizens for Change, an organization that seeks to reduce street violence and assist the families of victims. Earlier Sunday, Shamiya was remembered at her church.
CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports at First Baptist Congregational, the church Shamiya Adams attended, there were prayers and anger over the violent death of an innocent so young.
"For this young, 11-year-old to be killed in a senseless, vicious, crime, it grieves our heart, it leaves a hole in our soul," said Rev. George Daniels.
Shamiya gathered with several friends at a West Garfield Park sleepover Friday night and was supposed to attend a church picnic on Saturday, but she never lived to see it.
"A bullet pierced the window and the wall and took her little life. That is so senseless, its evil, it's despicable," said Daniels.
Victims' advocate Andrew Holmes is working to counsel the family, and find the killer. Aside from Shamiya's family, no one is grieving more than her friends gathering at her church, sharing their pain.
More than $8,000 has been raised to fund a reward for information that may lead to the arrest of a suspect in Shamiya Adams' death.
