Friends, Family And Politicians Gather For Javon Wilson's Funeral

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The funeral was held today for Jovan Wilson, the 15-year-old grandson of Congressman Danny Davis, who was shot to death last week in what police say was a dispute of a pair of basketball shoes.

The family of Javon Wilson was surrounded by politicians, mostly local current and former office-holders who came to pay respects at Carey Tercentenary AME Church 1448 S. Homan Ave. WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports.

Congressman Davis thanked presidents past, present for their kind words.

Just after hearing from President Obama, he said the phone rang again and a voice said can you hold for the president.

The crowd erupted in laughter when he said it was Donald Trump on the line.

Congressman Bobby Rush said Spike Lee was right to call Chicago 'Chiraq' and said it needs to become Chi-righteous.

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky noted Davis' forgiveness for the killers.

Javon Wilson's older sister Khaliyah, said she loved her brother, even though he was irritating. She said he was a gentleman, and then paused and added, sometimes.

She said she could never stay mad at him for long though, because he was so funny.

Congressman Davis said at the end of the service that the nation hasn't found the will to stop the flow of guns into the inner cities and children have not been taught enough self-respect.

A friend of Wilson's asked why can't arguments be settled with fists.
