Four Years Later, Widower Waits For Accused Drunken Driver To Stand Trial
(CBS) -- Bill Marvel is on a quest for justice.
In 2012, his wife Sandra was killed in a drunken driving crash that police say was caused by Michael Knezevich in St. John, Ind.
Knezevich's trial was supposed to start this past Monday. It didn't.
"It's not the prosecutors. I think the prosecutors have been extremely conscientious, very hard working. I'm very satisfied with them. They have to fight the system, just like we do," Marvel tells CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot.
Knezevich's blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit, authorities say. His defense attorney, Paul Stracci says a new motion was filed in the case to look at whether testing on the blood sample taken was done properly and "whether or not it's sufficiently reliable to actually be submitted as evidence."
CBS 2 legal analyst Irv Miller says it's not unusual for a trial involving blood evidence to take a long time.
"When you're analyzing your case and looking at the evidence, sometimes things pop up at the last minute that, all of a sudden, you have to investigate," Miller says.
Meantime, Marvel says, his life will never be the same, without his wife of nearly 50 years.
"I don't have any preference whether I wake up tomorrow or not," he says.
Knezevich has had three past DUI arrests, and three arrests for driving while his license was suspended.
The next hearing in the case is set for Feb. 5. The judge has ordered the defendant to appear in court.
