Four Bombs Found In Wauconda Home After Threat Against Police
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four crude bombs were found in a home in Wauconda after a man allegedly threatened to lure police to his house and blow them up.
Tom Ahern, spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said the suspect's threat alone was deemed credible enough to evacuate homes near the 400 block of Lake Shore Boulevard.
Police said they acted after receiving a tip that the suspect told a worker at a local business that he wanted to lure police to his home with the intention of blowing them up.
The suspect allegedly told the tipster that he is terminally ill and hates politicians and the police.
An ATF explosive detection K-9 team, an Illinois State Police SWAT team and the Wauconda bomb squad were called in to take part in a search of the suspect's home, and authorities found four crudely-made explosive devices inside.
"A search of the residence was made first, and then the ATF explosive detection K-9 team came in, and the dog hit on the explosive devices in the basement of the residence," Ahern said.
The Waukegan bomb squad dismantled the devices and saved them as evidence.
Ahern said the suspect would be charged with unlawful use of a weapon, due to the amount of explosives in each device.
A spokeswoman for the Lake County State's Attorney's Office said official charges were still pending Friday afternoon, and detectives were continuing their investigation.
