Former Nursing Home Employee Charged With Stealing From Elderly

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A former employee of a Hoffman Estates nursing home has been arrested for allegedly stealing from residents.

Bria Abrams, 21, has been charged with felony theft, for allegedly stealing from five elderly people living at Alden Poplar Creek, at 1545 N. Barrington Rd., while she worked there.

Hoffman Estates Police Sgt. Kasia Cawley said an investigation was launched in late January, a week after a woman at Alden Poplar Creek contacted the department about missing jewelry.

Investigators learned Abrams had stolen more than that.

"It was a combination of jewelry, electronics, and credit card information that she obtained," she said. "The investigator who worked on the case did recover some of this property at some local pawn shops, and that's how he was able to tie in the property with this offender."

It was not immediately clear when Abrams stopped working at the nursing home, or under what circumstances. Cawley said Alden Poplar Creek has been cooperative with the investigaiton.

Police believe they know the extent of the thefts, but encouraged anyone who might have been a victim to file a report.
