Former High School QB Sues IHSA Over Concussions
(CBS) -- A former high school quarterback has filed suit against the Illinois High School Association, claiming that it has done little to protect players, including himself, from concussions. WBBM's Bob Roberts has obtained a copy of the suit, which seeks class action status.
Daniel Bukal suffered multiple concussions while calling signals for Notre Dame Prep in Niles, graduating in 2003. Today, he says he still suffers frequent migraines and has notable memory loss.
The suit claims that IHSA has never required reporting and tracking of concussions or medical personnel at football games with specific expertise in diagnosing concussions, has failed to require medical personnel to be on hand during practices and has not mandated any concussion education for trainers. It wants all of that changed, along with pre-season baseline testing, strict protocols regarding return to practice and play, and monitoring of players who have suffered concussions even after they graduate.
IHSA is refusing comment.
