Nine Injured, Including FiveFirefighters, After Fire At U Of C Dorm For Faculty, Staff

(CBS) --Nine people -including five firefighters and a child - were injured in a smoky fire Monday afternoon in a 15-story University of Chicago dorm for faculty and staff.

Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford says the conditions ranged from good to serious. He says none of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening.

Some could be transported to hospitals, Langford says.

Langford says the four firefighters were being treated for smoke inhalation and for heat-related injuries.

He says the civilians were all being treated for smoke inhalation.

He says the fire at 5825 South Dorchester started in the basement in a large electrical transformer.

The EMS Plan 2 brought in about a dozen ambulances, Langford says.

It started about 4 p.m.
