Fire damages seniors' home in north Chicago suburbs

Fire damages north suburban Chicago senior living complex

WAUCONDA, Ill. (CBS) -- A fire broke out at a senior living complex in north suburban Wauconda Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the senior living facility at 310 Osage St. after reports of smoke. They arrived around 3 p.m.

Flames were spotted in the attic area and burned through the roof.

The fire was under control by the 4 p.m. hour, but the Wauconda Fire District said several units were severely damaged.

A resident of the building, Marge Allen, said the fire broke out on the third floor.

"They were installing some type of new heating and cooling units, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it or what," Allen said, "but the next thing we know, we're being evacuated."

Paramedics checked out one person, but that person refused to go to the hospital.

Residents will be staying at a local school gym nearby.
