Fire Ravages Building In Bridgeport

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A developing story out of Bridgeport this morning, firefighters have been working to put out a fire at a commercial building there.

The fire started around 1 a.m. and while the fire was under control as of 6 a.m., crews were working to put out hot spots.

Firefighters returned around 5:30 a.m. to hit some hot spots that reignited.

Firefighters had to set up ladders and master streams to tackle the tremendous flames shooting from DiFoggio Plumbing company, a family owned business here in Bridgeport for three generations.

The intensity of this fire at 3216 S. Shields created an explosion, roof collapse and showered the street with bricks.

Officials said DiFoggio had been renting the space to J & J Services, a power washing company. Arson investigators were called out, which CFD said was standard protocol, but they don't believe the fire to be suspicious.

According to its website, DiFoggio has been doing business in Chicago for more than 100 years.

The building used by J & J was essentially destroyed, while the nearby building occupied by DiFoggio sustained smoke and water damage.
