Fight Over Proposed Annex At Lincoln Park School To Go To Court

(CBS) -- The battle over a proposed annex for a Lincoln Park elementary school goes back to court Tuesday after opponents lost a battle at City Hall last week.

WBBM's Regine Schlesinger reports Jay Armstrong is one of those opponents. He lives near the Lincoln Elementary School and objects to the school system's plan for a $20 million annex to be built on the playground of the existing school.

Critics say the school overcrowded only by about 50 students, who easily could be accommodated at nearby schools. Armstrong says the $20 million would be better spent on schools in impoverished neighborhoods.

"Please, mayor, listen to me. You want to improve your ratings? Go back, stop this this annex," he said.

The school board insists the annex is needed because of overcrowding. Last Friday, the city's zoning board of appeals sided with the school board. Now a judge will decide whether to extend an order that has been holding up construction.
