Fiery Crash In Long Grove Shuts Down Portion Of Route 83

CHICAGO (STMW) -- No injuries were reported after a semi truck hit a disabled car in northwest suburban Long Grove Friday morning, starting a fire that destroyed both vehicles.

A car that had broken down on northbound Route 83 at Aptakisic Road shortly before 5 a.m. when the semi struck it from behind, according to a statement from the Long Grove Fire Protection District. The car's driver was outside the car at the time of the crash.

The semi's driver remained in the cab to call 911 but exited after he saw fire coming from the truck's engine compartment, according to the statement. The front end of the truck was on top of the car's trunk, and the fire quickly spread to engulf both vehicles.

Water was trucked in to help fight the vehicle fires, and it took about 2,000 gallons to extinguish them, according to fire officials. The car and the semi tractor were destroyed by the blaze.

Both drivers declined medical treatment and were released at the scene, according to the statement.

The Lake Zurich, Buffalo Grove and Lincolnshire/Riverwoods fire departments also assisted with the fire, according to the statement. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County sheriff's office.
