'It Was An Inferno': Fiery Crash In Tri-Taylor Leaves 3 Dead

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Three people died in a crash in the Tri-Taylor neighborhood just Sunday evening, after their car hit an SUV and then caught fire.

Fire officials said the incident took place shortly after 6 p.m. at Harrison Street and Oakley Boulevard.

Chicago police said a Chevy Malibu was traveling eastbound and struck a Mitsubishi Outlander going southbound on Oakley Boulevard. Police said the Chevy then struck a pole before catching on fire.

Witness Jonique Bolls shot video of the desperate attempts to open the car door.

One witness in the video can be heard saying, "someone is in that car."

Robert Phillips said he was just leaving a church service when the crash occurred. He tried to save a woman from the accident.

"The door was jammed, or whatever, and there was a lady in the back slumped over," Phillips said. "It was an inferno. ... I couldn't get her out."

One witness said the crash sounded like a gunshot.

The scene of the crash became emotional as loved ones learned of the incident.

The three occupants in the Chevy were pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the Mitsubishi Outlander sustained minor injuries.

Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating, and two persons of interest are being questioned in connection with the crash.
