Fan falls into visiting bullpen during Royals-White Sox game at Rate Field

CBS News Chicago

A fan fell into the visiting bullpen as the White Sox took on the Kansas City Royals Wednesday night, leading to a delay in the game.

The Royals had runners on first and second with no outs when the delay occurred. Cameras broadcasting the game captured stadium employees tending to a wall beyond right field, and it appeared that stadium workers were using a stretcher to treat the fan.

A White Sox spokesperson later confirmed that a fan had tumbled into the  Royals' bullpen.

The White Sox told CBS News Chicago, "Tonight's game was delayed in the fourth inning to allow White Sox personnel to treat a fan who had fallen into the visiting team's bullpen. The fan has been transported to a local hospital for additional treatment."

The Sox media team did not provide details about the extent of the fan's injuries, if any. No information was released about what caused the person to fall.

The Kansas City Star reported the fan who fell got excited by a player who scored in the third inning. A different fan told the newspaper that the man's friend tried to catch him, that the fan did not fall oh his head, and that he was breathing when the paramedics took him to the hospital.

These details have not been confirmed.

This is the latest incident in a list of mysteries at Rate Field, formerly Guaranteed Rate Field, formerly U.S. Cellular Field, formerly (new) Comiskey Park.

Nearly three years ago, a 42-year-old woman was struck in the leg by a bullet during a White Sox game. The bullet grazed another fan's abdomen.

There is still debate over whether the bullet came from inside or outside the stadium, and at least one lawsuit has been filed in the case.

A fan also fell from the stands during a Cubs-Pirates game in Pittsburgh in April 2025. A Pirates fan named Kavan Markwood said he jumped up to celebrate in the stands at PNC Park, and his body weight shifted.

He flipped over a railing, and it was all caught on video. Markwood told CBS News Chicago he couldn't believe the man plunging down in the video was he.

He tumbled about 20 feet. The fall broke his neck, fractured his skull, tore ligaments in his wrist, and collapsed his lungs, among other injuries.

Markwood recovered, but still has back pain. He said his thoughts are with the fan who fell at Rate Field on Wednesday.

CBS News Chicago also asked Markwood about some mean-spirited social media comments made by others about the Rate Field incident.

"I'm sure he didn't mean to fall over the wall. I know I didn't," Markwood said. "And it's not something that you should make fun of doing that, like they could've lost their lives easily."
