Family Of Local Olympian Traveling To Sochi Despite Security Concerns

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Anyone planning to travel to Sochi for the Winter Olympics has been told to proceed with caution.

CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker talked to the Chicago family of one Olympic hopeful who are determined to get their fears aside to cheer a loved one to victory.

Aja Evans facetimes her family from Konigssee Germany where she's preparing for the last international bobsled race before she competes with her team in the Olympic games.

"We're extremely excited," said Aja's mother, Sequocorria Mallory.

Mom, sister, brother and at least six other relatives and friends plan to attend the games in Sochi, Russia despite the news they can't ignore, terrorist threats.

"Of course I'm concerned as a parent, but I'm pretty sure the Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee, I'm pretty sure they've taken many measure to ensure that all the athletes will be as safe as possible," said Mallory.

"We've had a few general discussions leading up to the games," said Aja Evans.

And they've been told to expect more, many more about safety and security. But the basic message Evans says is, "We really don't need to worry. Just to focus on your training and they'll make sure we're ok."

"I think that everybody will be ok. You pray you know. I want to see my daughter compete so I'm going," said mother.

They leave for Sochi Feb. 6, and plan to be there nine days.
