Families Remember Victims Of E2 Nightclub Disaster

(CBS) -- Dozens of Chicago families paused to remember the 21 lives lost at the E2 nightclub 13 years ago.

At a memorial breakfast, relatives shared stories about the lives lost in February 2003 when a security guard sprayed pepper spray to break up a fight.

21 people died and more than 50 others were hurt during a stampede to escape the fumes.

The Brenda Williams, aunt of one victim, Nicole Patterson, described the tragic but unbreakable bond the families now share.

"I think it's very important that the families try to stick together and stay connected in whatever manner we can so that the legacy of those who transpired in that incident, it's not just that they died but they also left behind families that still love them," she said.

The club's owners are still on probation on criminal contempt charges for opening the second floor despite a series of building code violations.
