Families Of Assault Weapons Victims Endorse Gov. Quinn
(CBS) -- The families of violence victims lost to people shooting assault weapons joined the Brady Campaign and the Gun Violence Prevention Pac today, endorsing Governor Pat Quinn for re-election.
They chose the CTA stop at Clark and Congress where a man with an assault rifle shot at a train to endorse Quinn and ridicule Bruce Rauner for his remark that people might want to use assault weapons for target practice.
Sandy Phillips' daughter was killed in the Colorado theater rampage.
"An AR-15 was used along with several other guns that day. Our daughter was shot six times and the last shot was a head shot that blew her brains out," she said.
Another parent, Joy McCormack, lost her son Frankie, a DePaul student, shot with a Tech 9 at a party.
"He never saw Frankie before that day but that didn't stop him from using our son for target practice," McCormack said.
For his part, Bruce Rauner is not backing off the target practice remark, however, he said, "I strongly support restrictions on guns to keep them out of the hands of criminals and mentally ill folks. That's the most important thing we can do."
He said laws need to be enforced and people need opportunity and on Quinn's watch, he said, crime has been terrible.
