Falling ice punctures gas line in Elgin

A gas main ruptured when a piece of ice fell off a roof in the northwest Chicago suburb of Elgin Wednesday afternoon.

The Elgin Fire Department said the ice fell from the roof of a building at 770 Tollgate Rd. just north of Interstate 90.

The ice punctured the gas supply for the building.

A small area around the building was evacuated, the fire department said. No schools were dismissed.

Nicor Gas was on the scene Wednesday afternoon.
