Falling concrete punctures windshield of SUV, injures driver on Stevenson Expressway

A chunk of falling concrete broke through the windshield of an SUV on Friday afternoon, injuring a driver on the Stevenson Expressway near the Archer Heights neighborhood on the Southwest Side of Chicago.

Illinois State Police said, around 2:15 p.m., a black Lexus was heading north on Interstate 55 near Pulaski, when a piece of debris from the Pulaski overpass fell through the front windshield. Police initially said the object that hit the windshield was a piece of ice.

The woman driving the vehicle was taken to the hospital to be treated for lacerations, according to her daughter.

One lane of traffic on I-55 was blocked for about half an hour after the incident.
