UPDATE: Three Firefighters Injured In Extra-Alarm Blaze In Irving Park

(CBS) -- Three firefighters were injured Friday during an extra-alarm fire in Chicago's Irving Park neighborhood.

The fire at 3536 W. Irving Park was first reported around 1 p.m. Friday, and the response was elevated to a four-alarm level shortly before 3 p.m.

Fire officials tell WBBM's Bob Roberts that three firefighters have been treated for minor injuries in the fire, which damaged six businesses, including a library branch. One of the firefighters may have suffered burns during a smoke explosion, CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports.

Investigators say it appears the fire started in a drycleaners. The fire spread through the ceilings and into the "bowstring truss" roof, Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner Mark Nielsen said.

"Bowstring trusses are notorious for killing firefighters. So, we take extreme caution, and we started fighting this fire from the outside," he said.
